The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, OR ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organisation of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia, founded on 8 August, 1967

GENERAL FACTS
ASEAN covers an area of 4.46 million km2, 3% of the total land area of Earth. 
Population is approximately 600 million people, 8.8% of the world population. 
In 2010, ASEAN combined nominal GDP had grown to USD $1.8 trillion. 

If ASEAN were a single state, it would rank as the 9th largest economy in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia in terms of nominal GDP.

The ASEAN Vision 2020 agreed on a shared vision of ASEAN to outward looking, living in peace, stability and prosperity, bonded together in partnership in dynamic development and in a community of caring societies.


The ASEAN Community is comprised of three pillars, namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. 


TOURISM AND CULTURES & ARTS are important factors of the ASEAN Community. 

Tourism is one of priority sectors for ASEAN integration, ASEAN tourism performance continued with positive growth, despite of political situations in some ASEAN Member States and other challenges. ASEAN attracted more than 65 million tourists by the end of 2008. 

Culture & arts helps to promote ASEAN awareness, preserve and promote ASEAN cultural heritage, promote cultural creativity and industry, and engage with the community.


World Heritage Sites in ASEAN are both tourism and culture & arts related. It could attract the tourists to the region for economic growth and help to protect and preserve the world's greatest landmarks by sharing sense of community for local people.


At present, there are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 9 ASEAN state members. The exception is Brunei.
